Another podcast taking regular looks at work from Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster is Golden Age Superman, which, as the name might suggest, is focused on Superman’s Golden Age adventures. Hosted by Jon M. Wilson, the show started in January 2011. Each episode, Jon looks at a month or half-month in the life of Superman, starting at the beginning.
Jon is currently winding down his coverage of Superman’s second full year of publication. And, in his most recent episode, Jon concludes his look at Superman stories from November 1940.
Unfortunately, aside from a Shuster-penciled cover that doesn’t tie in with the story, Superman’s original artist doesn’t get much coverage this episode. However, Jerry Siegel is well represented.
First, Jon is joined by Charlie Niemeyer for a look at the 13-page Siegel-written Superman story from ACTION COMICS #32, which features the introduction of the Krypto Raygun (a story idea likely foisted upon Siegel in an attempt to sell toys). Going solo again, Jon also looks at a month’s worth of Siegel-written stories from the Superman newspaper strip. These include the Man of Steel rescuing Lois Lane, who has become the pawn of a master criminal, in the daily strip, as well as some robot-smashing fun in the Sunday strip.
While Jon’s show covers much of the same material as I do in The Thrilling Adventures of Superman, the show gets a high recommendation. Jon is a veteran podcaster and has his own unique take on the material that is likely to entertain. Episodes have been more sporadic in release of late, but that just gives you more time to catch up.
