I’ve talked several times about Billy Hogan’s Superman Fan Podcast, where, each episode, he grabs his indestructible cape and travels back in time to the Silver Age of Superman. Recently, Billy invited me on episode 259 to discuss one of my favorite Superman stories of all time — which just so happens to have been written by Jerry Siegel!
In the episode, we look at a trio of tales, including two by Siegel, starting with a book-length classic (and I do mean classic!) from SUPERMAN #149: “The Death of Superman!” As I talk about in the episode, the story is one of my all-time favorite Superman stories (not just by Siegel, but of all time), and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Superman stories of the Silver Age.
Siegel’s strength in writing twisted villains and gut-wrenching emotion are in top form in the story, and it features and end you probably won’t see coming — even if you know the title.
Billy and I then move on to ACTION COMICS #282, where the discussion includes Siegel’s 13-page Supergirl story, “The Supergirl of Tomorrow,” which is the (admittedly, somewhat anti-climactic) end to the epic Supergirl story Siegel had been unfolding for many months. Will the Maid of Might regain her powers? What about the manipulative Lesla-Lar and the machinating Lex Luthor? Billy and I reveal all as the story comes to a close.
A very big thank you once again to Billy for inviting me on the show — not only to share my love of Superman, but of Siegel, as well.
