The father-son duo of Andrew and Michael Leyland are back at it again on “Hey Kids, Comics!” In a recent episode, the Leylands continued to celebrate the Man of Steel’s 75th anniversary with part three of their series, “Happy Birthday, Superman!”.
With this installment, the guys have moved firmly into the Silver Age and the swingin’ ’60s — including the period with Jerry Siegel returned to DC Comics and the character he co-created with Joe Shuster more than two decades previous.
Among the stories discussed in the episodes are Siegel’s classic, “The Death of Superman” from SUPERMAN #149. As mentioned when Billy Hogan and I discussed the story, this is one of Siegel’s greatest Superman stories and one to certainly not be missed.
They also turn their attention to Siegel’s 12-page “The Sweetheart Superman Forgot” from SUPERMAN #165, a gut-wrenching tale of amnesia and lost love, also considered by many to be among the greatest tales from Siegel’s second run on the character — and a highlight of the Silver Age era.
