Seventy-five years ago today (give or take a couple weeks, depending on who you believe), this comic hit newsstands.
Inside, readers were treated to stories featuring seafarers, adventurers, cowboys, magicians and — most importantly — “a guy in a pair of tights and a cape” (to quote Christopher Darga).
When the book hit the stands, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster had already established themselves as published — and popular — comic book creators. However, the immediate, groundbreaking and astronomical success of Superman not only jump-started an industry, but permanently etched Siegel’s and Shuster’s names into the lexicon of pop culture and enshrined them among the legends of American fiction.
While this site is dedicated to celebrating all of Siegel’s and Shuster’s works, it is difficult to deny that, without Superman, their popularity might not be as enduring as it is. Read a Superman comic today in honor of Jerry and Joe.
