On the heels of Canada Post’s announcement about a new line of Superman stamps featuring the art of Joe Shuster, the Royal Canadian Mint has announced a line of Superman coins in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the character’s publication in ACTION COMICS #1.
Among the seven coins are three featuring the artwork of Shuster, a Canadian native.
The $75 14 kt. Gold Coin – Superman: The Early Years unit features the iconic image best known as the cover to SUPERMAN #1, but originally used as the opening splash to the Superman story in ACTION COMICS #10. It is limited to a worldwide mintage of 2,000, and retails for $750 (Canadian).
The 1/4 oz. $10 Fine Silver Coin – Vintage Superman unit features another iconic image of Superman breaking chains with his chest. The image originally appeared in an ad at the end of the Superman story from ACTION COMICS #1, and has been repeatedly used throughout Superman history. The coin is 99.99% pure, limited to a worldwide mintage of 15,000, and retails for $44.75 (Canadian).
Finally is the Lenticular Coin and Stamp Set – Superman: Then and Now, which features both Shuster’s aforementioned image from ACTION COMICS #10/SUPERMAN #1 cover and a modern-day homage by Jim Lee. As the coin moves, the image shifts from one image to the other. The coin is packaged with Canada Post’s stamp featuring the same Shuster artwork. This set coin is being produced on demand, and retails for $29.75 (Canadian).
The coins are now available and can be ordered through the Royal Canadian Mint’s website.
