I felt that

Superman … was very serious about helping people in trouble and distress, because Joe (Shuster) and I felt that very intensely.

Incoming: ‘Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman’ by Marc Tyler Nobleman (paperback edition)

Out this week is a paperback edition of Marc Tyler Nobleman’s “Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman.”

Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman

First released in 2008, the book has been lauded by … well, pretty much everyone who read it. The new version, along with more-pliable cover, also will have a few other minor tweaks for accuracy’s sake.

Miss out on the hardcover version? Be sure to get this one. And while it’s not about Jerry Siegel or Joe Shuster, be sure not to miss Nobleman’s “Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman,” a great companion — or stand alone — book, shining the spotlight on the too-often forgotten Bill Finger.

If you want to hear more about the background of “Boys of Steel” and how it came together, give a listen to the chat I had with Marc Tyler Nobleman in June 2012 as part of The Thrilling Adventures of Superman.

Reprinted Siegel and Shuster

Today is the unveiling of a new part of the site. Another step towards making this not just a tribute to the work of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, but a resource for finding that work.

While Siegel and Shuster collaborated or worked with other creators on more than 1,000 comic book stories, very few of these, Superman-related stories aside, have been reprinted. Reprints of Jerry Siegel’s and Joe Shuster’s Superman-family comic book stories are easy to come by. Between the Archive Editions, Chronicles and Showcase Presents series, as well as other reprint collections in recent years, approximately 75 percent of their Superman-related comic stories have been reprinted — some many times over.

But what about their other comic book works? Want to read one of the more-than 700 other comic book stories they worked on, either collaboratively or with other creators, but can’t afford an original issue? You need a reprint.

To that end, I am happy to present, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster: Reprints, a (to the best of my knowledge) comprehensive list of English-language reprints of Siegel’s and Shuster’s non-Superman works.

Know of any reprints missing from the list? Can you help fill out the list with non-English reprints? Be sure to send a message. And be sure to track down as many of the reprints as interest you. If publishers catch wind of an interest in currently reprinted material, they will be more likely to publish future reprints of little-seen stories.

A huge thanks to all of the hard-working editors at the Grand Comics Database and Mike Voiles of Mike’s Amazing World of Comics. This list could never have been compiled without all of the information provided these people.

Cleveland’s ‘Superman’ fence damaged

The fence surrounding the property which once contained the house a young Joe Shuster called home has been damaged again.

Damaged fence

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, a driver swerved from the road, crashing through the fence, located in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, about 5 p.m. June 5. According to the report, the man now faces charges including driving while intoxicated.

The large metal plates on the fence, reproducing the pages from the Superman story originally published in ACTION COMICS #1, were added in 2009 through a joint effort of the Glenville Development Corporation and the Siegel and Shuster Society. It commemorates not only the creation of Superman in the city, but also his creators, Jerry Siegel and Shuster.

The fence previously was damaged in May 2011 when a driver likewise crashed through the fence, but was later repaired, reportedly paid for by the driver.

For more information, see the Cleveland Plain Dealer and NewsNet5.
