Superman Forever Radio, episode 61

Like Jimmy Olsen?

Sure you do. And so does J. David Weter.

In fact, David likes him so much, episode 61 of Superman Forever Radio is dedicated completely to Superman’s Pal.

Superman Forever Radio, episode 61

After a brief look at the real-world history of Jimmy Olsen, David dives into four Jimmy-centric tales, including the nine-page “Elastic Lad Jimmy and His Legion Romances!” from SUPERMAN’S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN #76, which was written by Jerry Siegel.

In the story, the Legion of Super-Heroes transport Jimmy Olsen into the future to try and give him a little help in the romance department as he woos Lucy Lane. Clearly, it must have been a slow-crime-day in the 30th century.

Joe Shuster’s studio

Marc Tyler Nobleman, author of the great “Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman,” has posted some rare photos of the building on Euclid Avevnue in Cleveland that once housed Joe Shuster’s art studio.

Joe Shuster's studio

The building was razed in the mid-80s. Few photos of it exist today and, to my knowledge, there is no on-site notation of its historical significance.

Click over to Noblemania for a bigger view, as well as a second scan of it. Marc also posted a newspaper microfilm scan — unearthed by fellow author Brad Ricca — of the building that once held Shuster’s apartment.

Jerry Siegel items on auction block

Hakes.com is playing host to another auction of comic book and pop-culture memorabilia. Included in the items up for auction are two one-of-a-kind Jerry Siegel items.

First up is a pay voucher Jerry Siegel for his work on the Star-Spangled Kid story (untitled at the time, but since referred to as “The Bund Saboteurs”) from STAR SPANGLED COMICS #1. This was the first-published Star-Spangled Kid story following the three-page preview in ACTION COMICS #40.

Pay voucher

The voucher was filled out in pencil by Siegel himself and is noted “Ok by JSL” in ink in the lower right. JSL is likely a reference to Jack S. Liebowitz. The voucher is for the amount of $100, equivalent to approximately $1,650 is today’s dollars.

Also up for sale is a lot of letters regarding interaction and correspondence between Siegel, Joe Shuster, and “Li’l Abner” creator Al Capp.

Jerry Siegel letter signature

The first is a 1947 letter from Siegel to Al Capp, and offers some insight into Siegel’s and Shuster’s legal battles against DC Comics. The other two pieces of correspondence are from 1952, and deal with what seems to be money loaned by Capp to Shuster, and Capp’s inability to recover the money, due to Shuster having fallen on hard times.

Superman Fan Podcast, episode 261

The unstoppable Billy Hogan has released another installment, episode 261, of the Superman Fan Podcast.

Superman Fan Podcast, episode 261

There’s only one issue on the docket this episode, but it’s a doozy of an issue as ACTION COMICS #283 sees the Man of Steel and Maid of Might dealing withe the pitfalls and wacky transformations that come with… Red Kryptonite!

Siegel’s contribution is the 12-page Supergirl story, “The Six Red ‘K’ Perils of Supergirl!” The story finds the Girl of Steel heading into space to destroy any kryptonite she finds (she’s invulnerable to it now, remember?) but getting far more than she bargained for when it’s Red Kryptonite she finds!
