Upcoming: Superman (Vol. 3) #19 variant

As part of a celebration of the 60th anniversary of “MAD Magazine,” covers by some of the magazine’s Usual Gang of Idiots — including Sergio Aragonés, Al Jaffee, Peter Kuper, Tom Richmond and more — will be gracing DC Comics titles in the month of April.

DC has released a look at the variant cover to SUPERMAN (Vol. 3) #19, which is taking part in the promotion courtesy of a cover by the great Al Jaffee, paying homage to Joe Shuster’s classic cover to ACTION COMICS #1.

Superman (Vol. 3) #19 variant

As this is a variant cover, copies will be limited and possibly hard to come by. But with such a great piece of art, and given the occasion, I can’t help but respond, “What, me worry?”

SUPERMAN (Vol. 3) #19 is scheduled to be released April 24.

Joe Shuster in the seventies

Steven Thompson has unearthed some circa-1970s clippings of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, including this one of Shuster with Batman co-creator Bob Kane.

Click over to Booksteve’s Library for a look at the full scan, as well as one of an article featuring Siegel and Shuster from when they went public with their plight in the early- to mid-70s.

If you do some digging in Thompson’s archives at the blog, you’ll also find some other Siegel- and Shuster-related artifacts including an essay on the importance (or lack thereof) of ACTION COMICS #1 and a photo of Jack Kirby and Jerry Siegel (where would the comics industry be without those two guys?).

Hey Kids, Comics!, volume 2, episode 8

The father-son duo of Andrew and Michael Leyland are back at it again on “Hey Kids, Comics!” In a recent episode, the Leylands continued to celebrate the Man of Steel’s 75th anniversary with part three of their series, “Happy Birthday, Superman!”.

Hey Kids, Comics!, vol. 2, episode 8

With this installment, the guys have moved firmly into the Silver Age and the swingin’ ’60s — including the period with Jerry Siegel returned to DC Comics and the character he co-created with Joe Shuster more than two decades previous.

Among the stories discussed in the episodes are Siegel’s classic, “The Death of Superman” from SUPERMAN #149. As mentioned when Billy Hogan and I discussed the story, this is one of Siegel’s greatest Superman stories and one to certainly not be missed.

They also turn their attention to Siegel’s 12-page “The Sweetheart Superman Forgot” from SUPERMAN #165, a gut-wrenching tale of amnesia and lost love, also considered by many to be among the greatest tales from Siegel’s second run on the character — and a highlight of the Silver Age era.

Random Panel #19

Random Panel #19

A particularly eerie panel (by Golden Age standards) featuring one of the Spectre’s ghostly enemies.

Superman Fan Podcast, episode 259

I’ve talked several times about Billy Hogan’s Superman Fan Podcast, where, each episode, he grabs his indestructible cape and travels back in time to the Silver Age of Superman. Recently, Billy invited me on episode 259 to discuss one of my favorite Superman stories of all time — which just so happens to have been written by Jerry Siegel!

Superman Fan Podcast, episode 259

In the episode, we look at a trio of tales, including two by Siegel, starting with a book-length classic (and I do mean classic!) from SUPERMAN #149: “The Death of Superman!” As I talk about in the episode, the story is one of my all-time favorite Superman stories (not just by Siegel, but of all time), and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Superman stories of the Silver Age.

Siegel’s strength in writing twisted villains and gut-wrenching emotion are in top form in the story, and it features and end you probably won’t see coming — even if you know the title.

Billy and I then move on to ACTION COMICS #282, where the discussion includes Siegel’s 13-page Supergirl story, “The Supergirl of Tomorrow,” which is the (admittedly, somewhat anti-climactic) end to the epic Supergirl story Siegel had been unfolding for many months. Will the Maid of Might regain her powers? What about the manipulative Lesla-Lar and the machinating Lex Luthor? Billy and I reveal all as the story comes to a close.

A very big thank you once again to Billy for inviting me on the show — not only to share my love of Superman, but of Siegel, as well.
