Superman Fan Podcast, episode 252
Just in time for Christmas, Billy Hogan has released the latest episode, number 252, of the Superman Fan Podcast.
There’s only one issue on Billy’s docket this episode, ACTION COMICS #280, but the book contains two stories — both written by Jerry Siegel.
First up is the 13-page “Brainiac’s Super-Revenge!” Also featured on the cover, this story finds Superman facing off against, as the title might suggest, Brainiac! It is Siegel’s last major use of the character until 1965. The story also features an appearance by a character who was Superman’s neighbor in the pages of ACTION COMICS during the Golden Age — Congo Bill.
And second is the 12-page Supergirl story, “Trapped In Kandor!,” which continues Siegel’s Supergirl saga, as Supergirl seeks to reclaim her powers with a little help from her super-cousin… while two nefarious villains continue to plot against them both!

Heavy Metal, May 1985
In late 1984, Jan and Dean Mullaney’s Eclipse Comics published SIEGEL & SHUSTER: DATELINE 1930s, which published at-that-point unseen work produced by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster before being hired by Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935.
Publication of the book, which was 36 pages and the same dimensions as a comic book, even rated a blurb in the May 1985 cover-date issue of Heavy Metal magazine, written by Bhob Stewart, longtime writer for the magazine.
The article is a very surprising find, given that Heavy Metal lies far outside the wheelhouse of Siegel and Shuster and that there is unlikely to be a wide cross-section of people who are both avid readers of Heavy Metal and fans of pre-Golden Age comics.
A second issue of SIEGEL & SHUSTER: DATELINE 1930s was published in 1985 but, despite the article’s suggestion, did not reprint any FUNNYMAN stories, instead opting for more unseen work from the 1930s.

Random Panel #8
This panel comes from one of a handful of Marvel Comics stories written by Jerry Siegel and features one of the original X-Men, Angel! Unless I am mistaken, these Angel stories, published in two issues of KA-ZAR and an issue of MARVEL TALES, were the first solo adventures feature an X-Men character and published outside of the X-MEN title.

Great as Superman
I thought that Christopher Reeve was great as Superman. He really captured the sense of humor that Joe (Shuster) and I intended the early character to have.
