Superman Fan Podcast, episode 244

As part of the site’s mission to cover all things Jerry Siegel and all things Joe Shuster, I will regularly highlight episodes of podcasts covering work they have done.

One podcast that regularly discusses work by Siegel is Billy Hogan’s Superman Fan Podcast. While not the longest-running Superman podcast on the ‘net, the Superman Fan Podcast is the most prolific, with Billy producing near-weekly episodes for just shy of five years.

Originally covering a variety of Superman-related topics, at the beginning of 2011, Billy switched format and began a chronological look at the Superman and Superman family titles from the Silver Age. He is currently in the midst of covering the Superman books published in 1961 and, as such, covering many stories written by Siegel during his second tenure with the company, which lasted from 1959 to 1966.

In his most-recent episode, number 244, Billy looks at ACTION COMICS #277, which features “The Battle of the Super-Pets,” a Supergirl story written by Jerry Siegel.

In the future, I hope to do an in-depth look at Siegel’s Supergirl stories. But, be sure to check out the Superman Fan Podcast for Billy’s take on the material. Besides coverage of Siegel, Billy produces a great show and gets a high recommendation. Take some time and give a listen to this episode, as well as back-episodes and new ones as they are posted.

Welcome!

Today would have been Jerry Siegel’s 98th birthday, and I can think of no better way to mark the occasion than to kick-start something that has long been a dream of mine.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are primarily, and rightly, known as co-creators of the greatest super-hero of all time: Superman. But something often overlooked is that both Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created and work on a number of other titles and features — many of which still resonate today.

I’ve known for quite some time about Siegel’s and Shuster’s many contributions to comics beyond Superman, but it wasn’t until researching their lives as part of my podcast, The Thrilling Adventures of Superman, that it became truly clear how much they contributed — and just how unrecognized those contributions are.

There will undoubtedly be much Superman-related discussion in the days ahead. However, the site will also focus on other works from the men… from Doctor Occult and Slam Bradley to the Spectre and the Mighty Crusaders… and more. Siegel and Shuster: Mythmakers is dedicated to celebrating the lives, works and legacies of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — both collaboratively and individually.

More content will be coming in the weeks ahead, including in-depth looks at stories, podcasts, trivia, tributes to the men from throughout the years, rarely seen artifacts and much more.

So, welcome to the site and stay tuned!
